Amon Amarth: The Sylvee, Madison, Wisconsin May 4, 2024
Metal Crushes All tour

The Sylvee, by definition, means, “The Forest.” Now, with that being said, the sold out crowd was nothing less than “a forest” of fans in a storm of metal. Between the endless line at the entrance and at the merch tables as I walked in, I didn't expect anything less than an epic night. And Madison had earned its horns with the Metal Crushes All Tour with Amon Amarth, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, and Frozen Soul. An amazing night, to say the least. Let’s jump in.

Frozen Soul hailing from Dallas, Texas were the openers of the night. The band dove into their setlist, opening with “Invisible Tormentor,” a bone-crushing track that immediately had the crowd energized. The band was a great opening act to kick off the event. And…. Here's a bonus… the band had fans start playing MtG, (Magic the Gathering), which was a new experience to hear about at a show. (Unfortunately I didn’t join in). Please check out their latest album, Glacial Domination.

Setlist:
Encased in Ice
Death and Glory
Morbid Effigy
Arsenal of War
Arctic Stranglehold
Crypt of Ice

The mighty Obituary from Tampa, FL was next up. I saw them a few times, and right before the “Pandy”, it shut down the next time I could have seen them. They had the Obituary logo projected on the ceiling, with Pat Travers’s “Snortin’ Whiskey” playing. Then….. BOOM!!!

HOLY HELL!!!! It was like a thunderstorm hit Madison! Between “Barely Alive”, “The Wrong Time”, and “War”, I was stoked once again to watch them live once again. These veterans in metal didn’t disappoint. Check out their latest album, Dying of Everything.

Setlist:
Redneck Stomp
Barely Alive
The Wrong Time
My Will to Live
Slow Death
War
Dying of Everything

Cannibal Corpse crept onto the stage next. With a gore filled set that included favorites “Scourge of Iron” and “Evisceration Plague.” Now….

Frontman George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher donned the “Respect the neck!” shirt, which if I did 1/100th of the headbanging that he did, I would be in traction. F&@K…. That monster owns the stage every time he’s there. Then…“This is a fun song about ejaculating blood from your cock,” he said before bursting into “I Cum Blood.”

Setlist:
Scourge of Iron
Blood Blind
Inhumane Harvest
Evisceration Plague
Death Walking Terror
I Cum Blood
Summoned for Sacrifice
Stripped, Raped and Strangled
Hammer Smashed Face

Amon Amarth took the stage that shook the entire building! They immediately commanded presence, with their powerful sound and an electrifying display of Viking metal lineage that left the audience in awe.

Amon Amarth carries a ton of Viking imagery. From the statues to the giant helmet that was part of the drum riser, they are VIKINGS. Lead vocalist Johan Hegg should be knighted as one of the greatest metal frontmen. The man has a presence on stage that very few possess. At one point, they had flag waving “AA”, or theNorse mirrored, “FF” Viking characters.

At one point the crowd that was in the pit started a “Row Pit”. Which was INSANE. Flat out, an amazing set, and night.

Setlist:
The Pursuit of Vikings
Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags
Guardians of Asgard
Raven's Flight
Blood Eagle
Deceiver of the Gods
As Loke Falls
Find a Way or Make One
Put Your Back Into the Oar
The Way of Vikings
Heidrun
War of the Gods
Shield Wall
Raise Your Horns
Encore:
Twilight of the Thunder God
